Simple Steps in Mind Mapping for Teaching

Mind mapping for teaching is easy, especially when you’re using mind map software. Like I’ve said earlier, with mind maps you can create your lesson plan, prepare for lectures and presentations, and even plan for class activities. There are so many things you can do and it’s easy!

I’ll tell you how.

Mind mapping for teachers involves these simple steps. First you write down or type your main or central idea. Make use of a keyword or image to represent it. Remember that from this point you add ideas and information relating to the main idea you first identified. After this you can start entering ideas as they come.

This is now the time for some “brain dumping”. Put down everything you know about or can think about relating to the main idea. Don’t bother arranging them or categorizing them. Simply allow the flow of ideas to run smoothly.

Once you’re done writing down or typing in all your thoughts and ideas you can begin grouping them into logical structures. Mind map software allows you to easily move ideas around the different areas of your mind map. There is no need you should worry about it. When you’re done categorizing ideas you can begin identifying their relationships. By this time you have identified branches or sub-topics for your main idea.

Do these simple steps when you’re making

  • your lesson plan,
  • doing research,
  • preparing handouts,
  • making presentations,
  • identifying problem areas in your class, and
  • enhancing collaboration among your students.
