  1. What is competency based education

    3. Curriculum design
      1. Understanding NCERT learning outcomes – NCERT has developed Learning outcomes in all the curriculum areas at the elementary and secondary stage linking these with the curricular expectations and the pedagogical processes. The expected learning outcomes have been developed class-wise (from classes I to VIII) for subjects such as Environmental Studies Science Mathematics Social Sciences Hindi English and Urdu

      2. Suggested assessment framework – This document lays the competencies for the CBSE Science Mathematics and English Reading curriculum in a progressive manner for classes 6-10. Aligned with NCERT Learning Outcomes it has suggestive assessment objectives along with sample end of tests. The document provides the following :
        1. Learning ladder which sets out the content for each class for each subject
        2. Assessment objectives which set out the skills to be assessed and the proportion of marks
        3. Assessment specification which sets out the guidance for test duration, number of marks, content coverage, question types, mark scheme approach and rubric requirements.
        4. Example items that illustrate the types of items which can be used and how they can be grouped.
      3. Competency based framework for literacy – These documents focus on the PISA key competencies for various literacies and map them to the curriculum as well as the NCERT learning outcomes for classes 6-10 (Science, Mathematics and Reading). Practical examples for teaching and assessing across various content areas and competencies have been covered.
      4. CBSE Learning Framework – The CBSE in collaboration with Azim Premji University has developed Learning Frameworks for classes IX-X. These frameworks are comprehensive resources for teachers and include competencies assessment frameworks samples of pedagogical processes blueprints and assessment items and rubrics.
    4. Teacher Resources
      1. Teacher Energised Resource Manuals – These teacher resources aid in implementing competency based education in the classrooms. These grade-wise resources in Science and Mathematics (TERMs) are aligned to NCERT learning outcomes and textbooks. And provide teachers with exemplar assessments and strategies.

      2. Sample Lesson Plans- Sample Lesson Plans embedding a competency-based approach, Sample Lesson Plans have been created to support teachers to implement competency-based education principles into their teaching and assessment. This document is a compilation of ten sample lesson plans from class VI to class X.
      3. Teacher Training Module on CBE– This self access training module handholds teachers in understanding and applying competency based education in their classrooms. This module is accessible on DIKSHA.
      4. Teacher’s Resource for Achieving Los- This resource is aimed at supporting teachers to incorporate Learning Outcomes (mapped to the NCERT framework) in their day-to-day teaching and learning activities with children.
    5. Assessment
      1. CBSE Question Bank for Class X– Resource to familiarize teachers and students with the new CBE assessments.
      2. Curriculum Aligned Competency Based Test Items (Mathematics, Science & English) for Classes – 6 – 10– Compilation of assessment items that are aligned to the NCERT/CBSE curriculum. Developed in collaboration with Sri Aurobindo Society and ACER.
      3. Question Bank- Resources developed under CBSE British Council CBE Project to support the implementation of competency-based education.
      4. Practice Question Papers- Assessment Resources developed by Education Initiatives in Collaboration with CBSE across grades for various subjects. Contributed by Educational Initiatives.
      5. CCT Weekly- CBSE has been uploading weekly CCT questions (Science, Mathematics, Hindi and English Reading) on DIKSHA for students to practice joyfully.
      6. Video Series on Assessment and Evaluation- The videos focus on: Principles of assessment, What makes a good assessment- assessment design approach, item writing approach, objective questions, short answer questions, extended response questions, item production process, and assessment performance review.
        1. The videos communicate the important ideas and concepts in a conversational style, that is easy to comprehend. The videos can be accessed by teachers at their own convenient time. We hope the exposure would provide explicit directions and guidance to teachers to develop better assessments.
        2. Video Series on Assessment and Evaluation- In continuation to the CBSE initiatives to strengthen assessment and align it to competency based education, the Board in collaboration with British Council, India and Alpha Plus Consultancy, UK has developed a series of 08 videos on Assessment. These short videos will help teachers of all subjects to design assessment tasks and develop test items that are valid and reliable measures of students’ learning.
