Professor K.B.Athreya a luminary academician at Iowa State University U.S.A. and Visiting Faculty IISc Bangalore visited Rani Chanamma University Belgaum and delivered series of lectures at various institutes in the city. Q;A recent noticeable trend in the field of higher education is the desertion of pure science courses ,for want of lucrative careers in the field of I.T .Do you see this as a positive development? A;Absolutely not.Infact I am really worried about the dwindling of traditional sciences which is a core form of knowledge. Q;People usurping good IT skills ,getting high pay packages ,generating large amount of wealth and boosting the economy .Where do you find the lacuna? A; The trend of drifting to professions like I.T,Software etc.in anticipation of high paying jobs in a quick time frame has risen to unprecedented levels.Although the people in these fields earn a lot of money thereby contributing to the economic boom, the ramifications are enormous. These jobs are highly demanding and require long hours of work exceeding 14 hours a day. Moreover these jobs are looked upon largely as monotonous piece of work with no intellectual enhancement of an individual. There are instances of burnouts ,where the individual faces severe psychological problems. He may not be able to enjoy life or develop any creativity leading to personal unhappiness. More importantly his ...

An interview with Dr. Ashley has been transcribed for you to read. Dr. Ashley has expressed some of his views on education. You would really find the answers very insightful. Do read the interview questions and answers and provide your comments on that. (Dr. Ashley Tellis is an Assistant Professor, Department of Liberal Arts, IIT, Hyderabad. His areas of interest include Twentieth Century Women’s Poetry (Irish, English, US, Indian), Gender Studies (especially Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Studies, Dalit Literature and Culture (especially Marathi), Postcolonial Theory/Studies, Literary Theory, North-eastern Writing and Cultures, Black British Literatures, African Literatures, Latin American Literatures). Interview Dr. Ashley’s take on the Education System: Whats’s Right or Wrong with it? Q 1. Being an academician, you get to interact with many Indian and foreign students on a regular basis. Do you see any difference in the way students of different nationalities approach the Humanities and the Social Sciences? Are students taught to become ‘thinkers of tomorrow’ at most places? Why or why not? I have taught mainly in the Anglophone world – India, the UK, the US – and so the tradition is basically the same. Of these, the worst students are the US ones. This is because of the particular brand of shameless and self-righteous individualism on which they are bumped up through the school education system since the retrograde 60s when student evaluations came in and a mindless disregard of the teacher and of pedagogic authority entered US academia in the sheep’s ...

Please tell us how Educosoft was conceptualized? It has evolved from my own experiences as a teacher for more than 40 years, enriched with input from several educators across the world that we have been able to interact through seminars, conferences, and research symposia. Based on the successful outcomes of several pioneers in this field, we identified three critical areas where appropriate technologies can help to improve the quality of instructional outcomes. 1. To empower the teachers to be more effective as presenters and discussion leaders in classes, and providing reliable and effective supplemental support to students, 2. To provide technology tools and question banks to teachers that can assist in creation, administration, and management of assessment, on regular bases. 3. Technology tools must be easy to use and learn (to minimize resistance to change) that must help teachers to save time from what they are used to, and should help them to do all that they have been thinking to do but could not because of time limitation and the amount of efforts involved.. These were the three motivating factors that inspired us to develop Educosoft. This platform had been evolving since 1985 in United States when PC had just entered education field and IBM used this product to promote their first generation PC. We kept on changing along with the changing technologies and feedback from users and experts in the field of Instructional Technology (IT). Now, it is being recognized perhaps as the best platform ...
